Holistic Living — A Living Proposal
Every day is a practice.

Flow|RYU
Holistic Living — A Living Proposal
Dadaocheng has always been a city in flow.
From dried goods, tea leaves, and textiles to ideas, culture, and ways of living, different people and stories have gathered here, moving forward through continuous exchange. What flows through this place is not only goods and people, but also craft, culture, memory, and thought.
My grandfather once sold velvet and formalwear fabrics in Dadaocheng. Many years later, I returned here with Fly by Knight. From fabric to lifestyle, from commerce to cultural dialogue, different generations have each carried life forward in their own way.
I think Kuo’s Astral Bookshop is also this kind of place.
Every book holds another possibility for life. Every act of reading, every conversation, and every encounter adds another layer to our worldview. We are not here to search for a single answer, but to keep revising the way we understand the world through different people, places, and experiences.
To express is also to receive. To share is also to learn.
This is the perspective that Flow|RYU hopes to share.
When we begin to understand the world through a holistic perspective, we may realize that we have never been mere observers, but part of a larger whole. The body, the city, nature, culture, and other people continually influence one another. Everything we experience reshapes the way we see the world.
Reading and cultivation share something essential. Both begin in the ordinary: in a breath, a conversation, a book, a journey. Through them, we practice observing the world, and ourselves, with greater sensitivity. Between the imagined and the real, we read the stories of others and come to see our own lives anew.
I hope Flow|RYU becomes a place for new encounters. May books, the body, the city, and everyday life meet here in Dadaocheng, nurturing cultural exchange and a living proposal for our time. May everyone who steps into the bookshop begin with the ordinary, explore the world with new eyes, and grow into a fuller sense of themselves within the flow.
—
Flow begins in each everyday moment we are willing to experience with care.
Perhaps what truly changes us is not a single great event, but the small encounters that continue to happen, quietly and constantly.
—
For this exhibition, I bring landscapes from my journeys, martial arts and bodily practice, and my explorations of Daoist thought and everyday life into the bookshop’s attic. Through images, clothing, objects, and words, experiences gathered along the way meet in one space.
Self-cultivation can begin with something ordinary.
A breath, a habit, a conversation, or a renewed awareness of the body.
Through continued practice, we develop bodily awareness and gradually cultivate an aesthetic sensitivity to everyday life.
Every day is a practice.
The exhibition’s “Ten Questions on Self-Cultivation” invites us to reflect: How does the body remember emotions? How does our way of living shape who we are? Do we want to change ourselves, or understand ourselves more deeply?
These questions will also extend into workshops and conversations throughout the exhibition.
I have invited teachers and friends who explore self-cultivation and bodily awareness in different ways to join as “Fellow Travelers.” Through martial arts, bodily practice, sound, scent, herbs, Daoist traditions, culture, and everyday life, they will share their experience and guide participants in the bookshop’s attic. As these experiences meet, a new jianghu—a community of practitioners and fellow travelers—takes shape.
Bringing the world of martial arts closer to us, and self-cultivation into everyday life.
“It’s not retro we seek but rather authenticity we pursue.”
This has long been the spirit of Fly by Knight, and it runs through this exhibition. How can the skills and wisdom passed down to us be felt, understood, and practiced in our lives today? Each fellow traveler offers a different perspective, inviting us to look again at the world, and at ourselves.
Come for a visit, take a seat, and practice with us.
Bring your stories, questions, and feelings, and become part of the flow.

流|RYU
Holistic Living — A Living Proposal

Every day is a practice.
